Are you familiar with imposter syndrome? It’s the feeling that you are simply faking your way through life and that everyone’s going to figure out you’re a fraud one day. But imposter syndrome is one of the many ways our brains lie to us. So how do you overcome the fear that you’re underqualified for a job?
Here are a few ways to feel more confident when starting a new role.
You Were Hired for a Reason
A crucial mantra you can repeat to quiet that imposter syndrome is “I was hired for a reason.” Your employer saw something in you, whether specific skills or your potential, that made them interested in you for this role. Trust that they’re the experts, and they wouldn’t have hired you if they didn’t think you would be a good fit for the job.
Change Your Mindset
We know that anxiety is a significant concern for many people, but anxiety can be quieted. Take some time to regroup, engage in mindfulness, and update your internal monologue to be more reflective of positive energy. It may not feel like it, but anxiety is normal and even helpful as it can give you room and motivation to grow.
Use Positive Affirmations
Here are a few positive affirmations you can write down and repeat when you’re feeling particularly vulnerable:
- I am a strong and capable person.
- I earned this job.
- I don’t have to be perfect to be effective.
- I have value to others.
When in Doubt, Plan It Out
Sometimes a more practical approach is best. When you feel overwhelmed with your job, take a step back. Go back to the beginning and create a plan that accounts for each specific project phase. Now, you can tackle it in smaller chunks and cross each part off your list when you’ve completed it.
Share Your Experience
It can also help to know you’re not alone. A lot of people feel this way at work. Talk to your friends and family about your feelings of imposters syndrome. Talk to a therapist who can help you work through some more considerable challenges. Feelings like this are expected, and you can overcome them.
