These Skills Will Help You Compete in Today’s Workplace

We live in interesting times. After two years of upheaval, many of us are looking forward to 2022, hoping for more normalcy. But, the job market is proving to be volatile, and with the effects of The Great Resignation, there are more opportunities for workers today. So how can you compete in today’s workplace? Here are the skills that will serve you best as you search for your next job and work toward career success.

Great Skills To Develop This Year

Listen More, Talk Less

One skill to focus on is active listening. As humans, it’s natural for us to listen only long enough to formulate a response. But that means you might miss important information because you’re concentrating on what you want to say next. Active listening means that you really pay attention to what the other person is saying. When they have finished, ask them questions to clarify or repeat what you’ve heard back to them so you can confirm you understand.

Think Critically

Critical thinking skills are becoming increasingly important. As misinformation becomes so disseminated, it’s important that you know how to tell truth from fiction. Critical thinking means not just looking at the surface of any given situation but thinking about whether it’s accurate or helpful. Be more self-aware, know your own biases, and take a close look at existing evidence before coming to a conclusion.

Be a Problem Solver

In the workplace, you’re only as good as the last problem you solved. When you can show how you solve an existing situation, you become invaluable in your job. That’s true when you’re applying for a new position as well. Hiring managers will talk to dozens of applicants, so you want to stand out. Identify the problem they’re trying to solve with the job opening and show them how you can be that solution.

Adaptability

If we learned nothing else in the last two years, we realized we need to be more adaptable when situations arise. No one fully understood the ramifications of everything that happened throughout the pandemic and continues to affect our daily lives. If we aren’t adaptable, we’re not going to find success in future opportunities.

Orange! Yes, it is one of Nextaff’s main colors but it was my favorite before coming to Nextaff. In the franchising world, I’m known as “Orange pants guy”.

When it comes to operating a staffing firm, Cary has worn every hat.  From recruiting, to sales, to management, to ownership, he has been involved in every aspect of running a successful staffing business.  He has successfully led three separate companies to the Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 lists, which puts him in an elite class of staffing entrepreneurship.  Combining that experience with a strong passion for entrepreneurs makes Cary an ideal leader for driving the Nextaff vision.
