This How to Give Employees Feedback to Help Develop Their Skills

Employees can’t work in a vacuum. As a manager, it’s essential to know that whatever you put into your employees is what you get out of them. That’s why it’s so critical to provide regular feedback to help your team learn and grow. So what are the best ways to give employees constructive feedback so they can develop their skills? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Develop Shared Goals

You have company goals, and your employee has career goals. It pays to try to match these goals together when providing feedback. When you assess your employees’ performance, you’ll note what they can accomplish, especially when engaged in the work. You can talk to them about creating shared goals that get you both to where you want to be.

Have Regular One on One Meetings

Don’t save feedback for an annual review. You should hold regular one-on-one meetings with your employees not only to provide feedback on their performance but so you can hear their feedback. Don’t just have an open-door policy. Set aside time on your calendar so your employees know they’re always a priority.

Provide Timely and Constructive Feedback

Some managers make the mistake of saving constructive feedback for a formal meeting. But by the time you say something, mistakes may already have been made. When you see something that needs to be corrected, say something right away. Always talk to the employee privately so they don’t feel like you’ve singled them out in front of their coworkers.

Show Appreciation

Never forget that gratitude goes a long way. Make time to thank your team members for their contributions regularly. Show them that they’re valued and appreciated. You can provide extra perks and incentives just because you are grateful they’re working with you.
