Getting Hired: Dressing the Part

Most people know the saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the job that you have.” This sentiment also applies while interviewing for that very position! An often overlooked aspect of the interview process is wardrobe. While experience and capability are extremely important factors when applying for a position, it also falls on you to present a well-tailored version of yourself to a potential employer. Here are some tips on choosing your interview apparel so you can put your best foot forward at your next job interview:

Avoid flashy or distracting patterns. Eye-catching shirts and ties may seem like a good choice due their boldness, but they can actually cause more harm than good. Loud and vibrant patterns could distract even the best of interviewers and shift their focus from what you’re saying, to what you’re wearing.

Mind the fit. Clothes that are too tight and restrictive, or clothes that are too loose and baggy give the wearer an unprofessional appearance. Look for an outfit that fits you well and offers any necessary flexibility.

Wear something that makes you feel comfortable. It’s very tempting to buy new clothes and shoes for an interview this isn’t always the best idea. If the new outfit feels itchy or constricting in any way this could lead to minor distractions throughout the interview and could ultimately hurt your performance. Although it may seem like a good idea to wear your most expensive-looking outfits to an interview, oftentimes this isn’t necessary. Instead, find your “go-to” outfit for interviews that makes you feel confident.

A good thing to keep in mind when dressing for an interview is thinking about what you’d like to wear day to day if you actually got the job. This gives the employer a sense of who you really are and what you can bring to the table if hired.

The desire to impress and over-dress can sometimes be overwhelming, but always err on the side of understatement. Remember, you’re there to impress them with your ideas and expertise, not just your outfit!
