When an interviewer asks if you have any questions for them, it’s your last chance to make an impression they will remember, and too many people tend to brush this part off. If you don’t ask any questions, they will think you aren’t interested in the job, but if you ask the wrong questions, you may tank your chances of getting hired. Here are five smart questions to ask in your job interview to put you over the edge.
What is a typical day on the job like?
Whether you’ve been in your industry for years or are starting fresh, this is a great question to ask. Cultures change from company to company, and it’s your chance to get a feel for this one. This also lets the interviewer know you’re thinking about day-to-day life with their business. As they answer, pay attention if they throw out words like “overtime” or “extra duties.” Remember, you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. It has to be right for both sides.
Is there anything on my resume that concerns you?
Asking the question gives the interviewer a way to ask about details which are unclear on your resume without being accusatory. This lets them know that you’re open and willing to answer what they need to know about you. It also gives you the chance to explain and sell yourself in further detail. If you had a gap in working, a career switch, or a skillset that doesn’t quite match, be prepared to talk about them.
What do you like most about working here?
This question does two things, both of which are ultimately beneficial for you. First, it gives the current employee something to brag about which may not have otherwise been covered. Things like vacations, company culture, or any perks which could help sway your decision to work there. On the other hand, if the interview hesitates or really has to think to come up with something positive about working there, you can choose to move in a different direction with your job search.
What training or classes is required to start/in the first year?
Forward thinking is always going to win you some brownie points. This question shows that you’re thinking about the challenges ahead and you want to learn what to expect. Also, if there are any classes you have to take before you begin work, you can get a jump on them. Your enthusiasm will be impressive to the people looking to hire.
What’s the next step of the interview process?
With the world moving as fast as it is, people will often forget to call you and tell you whether or not you’ve been hired. This shows the interviewer your confidence in doing the job because you’re thinking about the next steps. Not only that, but it gives you a chance to prepare yourself for whatever is next, giving you a leg up on your competition.
