According to a recent Entrepreneur article, in general, job seekers do not expect to stay with the job for more than three years. While this might be disheartening for companies looking to hire loyal employees, this does not mean you cannot acquire talent who will stick around long-term. According to the article, the key to finding employees who will stick around is to focus on employees who are motivated by purpose rather than by money or status. In a survey of 7,7000 millennials in 29 countries, 88 percent of those who plan to stay with their current employer for more than five years feel a sense of purpose in their work. There are several ways you can find the sort of employees who will stick around.
Focus on Candidate’s Goals and Values During the Interview
Ask questions during the interview process that will help you understand the candidate’s goals and values. You may want to ask questions that help you understand why the person applied for the job. Was it simply because the person needed a job, or was there something about your company that drew the person to the position? Ask questions that help you determine some of the candidate’s values. Does the person value a company that donates to the community? Are they looking for a small company that values the opinions of all employees, from the CEO all the way down to the new intern? Do they hope to make a positive impact on the world beyond just your local community? Compare the candidate’s values to your company’s values.
Share Company Values With Candidates
It is important to also let the candidate know your company’s values right away. If possible, explain as much as possible in the job description, and expand upon the company’s values throughout the interview process. Help candidates understand how their job will positively impact the company. Simply knowing the mission, purpose, and values of your company will help candidates to feel more connected to the company, which will make them more likely to want to stick around longer.
